EducationEducational opportunities abound in Wooster. The public schools enjoy wide community support as evidenced by the recently completed new Wooster High School. At the same time, tradition is being maintained by the recent renovation of the old high school into the Cornerstone Elementary School. The district's more than 4,000 students are served by over 250 teachers for an approximate 17:1 student/teacher ratio. The district includes eight elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, as well as a county vocational school. Wayne County also serves mentally and physically handicapped children through the Ida Sue School and the Nick Amster Sheltered Workshop. Private SchoolsThere are also private schooling opportunities available in the Wooster area. The Wooster Christian School is operated by the Grace Bretheran Church. It provides a school program for children ages preschool through the sixth grade. St. Mary School is a local Catholic school which serves children from preschool age through the seventh grade. It is not, however, limited only to Catholic students. Central Christian High School in nearby Kidron provides education for students in grades nine through twelve. The school is associated with the Mennonite church although it is open to students of all religions. A more recent addition to the community is the Wayne County Montessori School located in Wooster. It currently provides schooling for the first through third grades. As students progress through the higher grades it is expected that additional grades may be added in the future. It was organized by a group of parents who had experience with the pre-school Montessori program in Wooster. Higher EducationWooster is in the unique position of being able to provide a variety of higher education opportunities. The College of Wooster is a small liberal arts college serving 1800 students. Among the College's unique features is the fact that it is one of only a few schools in the country which have a required independent-study program. Recently the College completed construction of the Flo K. Gault Library for Independent Study and the Timken Science Library to further support the independent-study program. As a complement to the major agricultural community in surrounding Wayne County, Wooster is also the home of Ohio State University's Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI). Students can receive an Associate of Applied Science or Associate of Science degree which allows students to pursue completion of a bachelor's degree at the University. Sharing a campus with the ATI is the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center. Scientists there perform research in all areas of agriculture. Many graduate students also find opportunities to conduct research at the OARDC. Just minutes away in nearby Orrville, you can find Wayne College, a branch of the University of Akron. Students can begin work at Wayne College towards a bachelor's degree and then transfer those courses to the main University campus for completion. The College also provides a corporate training program which is used by many local companies. In addition, there are also some vocational education opportunities available in Wooster.
