There are 46 folder boxes in the collection. Within each box is a folder containing a legal pad or, in several instances, notes and clippings. The boxes are numbered 1-46. The folders within each (about 10-12) are numbered using the old number system (John Murphy`s) - 1.1, 2.1, 2.2. The old numbering system does not correspond to the new boxes, so Box 4 might contain pad number 2.1, 2.2 etc.
The pads in Box 1 begin with legal pads - notebooks. The notebooks run chronologically through Box 33, year 1978. There are more notebooks which have been donated to the collection (by Richard Wood) and these go back to 1950. They are not filed chronologically, and are contained in boxes 40-45. There are other miscellaneous gifts in these boxes - mostly mimeographed sections of notebooks donated by other students. Typed papers and typed class notes are contained in Boxes 34-38. (i.e. what had been numbered 7 & 8 by Murphy).
Box 46 contains letters, clippings, miscellaneous items, an edited version of the Locke Lectures with an historical introduction by Ronald Hustwit (myself), and a cassette tape of Bouwsma reading from his notebook on Wittgenstein.
An unmarked file box contains the gifts of Harry Nielson. Five uncatalogued boxes called UNCAT contain miscellaneous gifts added to the collection. These include Bouwsma`s annotated copies of Finnigan`s Wake and Ulysses, three boxes of pocket notebooks from the period 1925 Ð 1956, and letters (including several from Wittgenstein) and miscellania.
In addition to these boxes, there are 5 reels of microfilmed copies of the 1925 Ð56 notebooks. Restrictions on these notebooks have been lifted.
